Nakhonsithammarat - is located approximately 800 kilometres south of Bangkok on the East coast and is in an ideal location for those wishing to explore Southern Thailand. The province itself is situated on the east coast between the provinces of Surat Thani to the north, Phattalung and Songkhla to the south, Krabi and Trang to the west and the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand just a couple of miles to the east. The popular tourist islands of Koh Samui and Phuket are only a couple of hours away and the Malaysian border is just three hours to the south. Public transport is cheap, plentiful and reliable. The road system is good with wide surfaced roads and little traffic. There is also the State Railway, an interesting if rather slow way of getting around. The south of Thailand is home to some very tasty but spicy foods and a wide array of delicious exotic fruits. A true gourmets paradise! Nakhonsithammarat is still lucky in that it has largely been kept off the tourist trail. The local people and their traditions are as they were and have not been spoilt by the influx of tourists and holiday makers. It is a large province containing many natural wonders and some of the highest mountains in the region. The climate is tropical.

Places of interest - Nakhonsithammarat has been blessed with so many natural wonders. There are long, beautiful sandy beaches - emerald green jungle covered mountains - crystal clear rivers - many natural parks - some of the nicest waterfalls in the country and finally some extremely friendly people. Khoa Luang National Park is an exceptionally scenic area easily accessible from the town. The main provincial town itself has a fairly large population with well approximately one million people. The town itself has all the amenities one would expect from a large city including shopping malls, international level hotels, a good road and rail infrastructure. There are several hospitals, and for travelers with little time, there is a recently built airport.

Wat Phramahatat

There are several places of interest nearby. These include 1000+ yr old 'Wat Prahmahat Worramahaweeharn' which is one of the most famous Buddhist Temples in Southern Thailand. Nakhornsithammarat is also home to 'Nangthalung', a most fascinating and unique form of shadow puppetry. There are also various products made locally as part of Thailand's 'OTOP' scheme and these can be found throughout the region.

Where to stay - There are several places in Nakhonsithammarat in which to stay. The biggest and best hotel is the 'Twin Lotus Hotel' situated on the outskirts of town. This four star hotel has all the amenities you would expect. Nearer to the centre of town, there is the recently extended 'Grand Park' , the new Ligor City, the quaint 'Nakhon Garden Inn' and a wide range of other accommodation ranging from some basic guesthouses to fairly nice hotels for those on a budget.

Where to eat - Local Thai food can be found everywhere almost 24 hours a day. The seafood is some of the freshest and tastiest in the country. There are also restaurants specializing in Korean, Malaysian, Japanese, Vietnamese and other types of foreign food.  A 'KFC', 'Pizza Company', an 'OK Steak House' and a 'Swensons' will satisfy those wishing for a taste of 'western' food.

*A word of warning . . . some of the local food can be extremely spicy!!

What to Do - Although Nakhonsithammarat is not as vibrant as some of the other cities in Thailand, there are various activities available for everyone to enjoy. There is the large 'Talad Park' which is home to the Nakhonsithammarat Zoo. This park also has many beautiful serene areas and local delicacies can be bought nearer the centre. For the sports enthusiasts there are several basketball courts, football pitches, gyms and swimming pools dotted around the town. Nakhonsithammarat also has a range of markets selling fresh local produce and locally made handicrafts. The biggest market, held every Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday is an ideal spot to amble around and sample Thai life. For the more active, charter a 'songtaew' and go hiking in the nearby Khoa Luang National Park. Here there are some of the tallest peaks in the South of Thailand so if it's hiking up mountains, relaxing in a beautiful waterfall or just lazing the day away on a beach, Nakhonsithammarat has it.
